About Our PNES PRogram

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures are events that look like epileptic seizures but are triggered by a history of trauma, abuse, and/or overwhelming stress.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures ARE NOT FAKE. These experiences are stressful and traumatic experiences that require a comprehensive treatment approach.

The University of Louisville Physicians neurology group has partnered with the UofL Trager Institute to develop a comprehensive program to meet the needs of patient experiencing psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. The program includes both medical management by Dr. Christopher Shafer and psychological services provided through partnership with the UofL Trager Institute and is designed to meet immediate needs while assisting clients in addressing long term issues.

Understanding Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures:

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures are unconscious coping mechanisms

People experiencing non-epileptic seizures are
often rejected by providers and the public as
attention-seeking “fakers” alienating them from the very people who should be helping them

They affect every people of every walk of life around the globe

Successful treatment must include
attention to both the seizures

and their underlying cause and triggers

Up to 20-25% of patients presenting to epilepsy centers have non-epileptic seizures
